Where can I find (free) recommendations for movies ?

I know of IMDB top 250: http://www.imdb.com/chart/top

Are there other places worth visiting ?

  • Check out metacritic. From their own site:

Metacritic compiles reviews from respected critics and publications for movies, DVDs, music, television and games.

Tal Galili : Cool (fill in words)
    From LBushkin
  • Theres always Rotten Tomatoes best of page: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/top/

    From Jessie
  • I use The Numbers to see which movies are highly rated; as well as historically which ones did well in the theater, or on DVD.

Tal Galili : I just gave you my last vote for today :)
  • Two really famous sites are:

  • If you've already got a Netflix account1, there's the Netflix Top 100, Critics' Picks, and Award Winners.

1 Yes, of course Netflix isn't free, but if you're already paying for an account there's no incremental cost for these lists.

    From Al Everett
  • You already mentioned Imdb Top 250 but in general the whole site is very useful and I find the User Rating pretty accurate. I tend to like movies that get good marks and dislike the ones with bad marks. In some cases I had to disagree, mostly because I found films with low marks better than expected. Another great site is Roger Ebert's who makes short and well founded reviews of most popular films.

  • You might be interested to check out Flickchart.

It's a recommendation tool by way of ranking your favorite films via movie matchups. It keeps track of your preferences and the movies you haven't seen yet, while automatically building a list of your favorites movies and a list of the best movies you've never seen.

  • A really good one is clerkdogs.com

  • I found http://www.hellomovies.com/ to have a nice UI for tracking what you have seen and what you want to still see.

The "recommendations" (using some sort of algorithm I assume) are not great, but they have a meta-ranking on top of IMDB that shows unseen top movies which you can then filter down by genre/year/taste/your social circle, etc.

Combined with the straightforward way to track what movies you want to watch and the ability to see where you can access these movies now online (Hulu, Netflix, etc) it's a winner.

Can I control how often Gmail polls POP3 accounts for incoming mail?

I use Gmail to handle my mail, but it's mostly imported by Gmail from an external POP3 account.

Normally this works fine, but I;ve had some instances where Gmail has gone almost 24 hours without even trying to contact the POP3 server.

Now, on Gmail 'desktop', I can push the "refresh" button, and it will do it, but when I access Gmail from my mobile, the mobile version of the site (on Android 1.5, not that it matters) doesn't seem to have a way of doing this refresh. AFAIK I can't even access the POP3 settings.

How can I get Gmail to poll in a guaranteed timely fashion?

From web app Roddy
  • You can't.

Polling a external account works when you have a legacy account, that you don't want to abandon, but it's not very important.

If you want to be sure the account is checked frequently, add it as a separated account in the Android device (you can leave the messages in the server if you want this mails consolidated in GMail)

  • Lifehacker.com just published a trick to increase the frequency of the checks.

    http://lifehacker.com/5580553/increase-the-frequency-gmail-checks-your-other-email-accounts-for-new-mail

Its a bit of work to set it up, but essentially you need to ensure that your pop3 accounts frequently get new mail.

Gmail bases its mail-fetching frequency on how often it finds messages in the account when it checks; if the account only gets email rarely, Gmail will check it once per hour. From what I've been able to tell, given a regular rate, Gmail's mail fetcher seems to stabilize at fetching twice as often as mail appears in the account.

Senseful : You can also use Google Calendar for this: Make a dummy calendar and an event that is repeated every X minutes. Set up an email reminder for this event.
    From geoff
  • If you look under Google Labs, there's a feature called:

    Refresh POP accounts

"Fetch messages from your POP accounts on demand by using the refresh link on top of the inbox."

Is there any way to turn off friend suggestion on Facebook?

Imagine that I have two friends - Alice and Bob - and I want to prevent Alice from showing up in Bob's friend suggestions ("people you might know"). Can I do that?

  • You cannot do that directly, but you can ask Alice to block Bob and then Bob will not see her.

To block Bob, Alice can go to Bob's profile and click "Report/Block this Person" and check the "Block this Person" box, or she can go to Account » Privacy Settings » Block Lists » Block Users and enter Bob's name or email address.

Andrew : Hmmm, I haven't thought about it this way. Thanks!
    From mark4o
  • You will need to tell Alice the following:

Choose the "Privacy Settings" option in the Account drop-down menu at the top of any Facebook page. Select "View settings" in the "Basic Directory Information" section. Change the setting for "Send me friend requests" to "Friends of Friends"

Source - How do I prevent myself from appearing in Suggestions?

mark4o : Unfortunately that won't work in this case because Alice is a friend of a friend to Bob.
phwd : Ok my bad I thought the friend of friend worked only if person A intentionally suggested person B (via their profile page) to be a friend to person C. I have no way to test this as I do not have two friends who will want to use their time like this :D

Sync Google Apps Calendar to my iPhone

I have a Google Apps account through work. I've noticed that when I add a calendar event there is a significant lag time between when I add the event and when it appears on my iPhone. Additionally, edited events don't seem to be reflected on my iPhone. Is there a way that I can ensure that events are added and updated in a timely fashion?

  • On the iPhone under Settings->Mail... go into Fetch New Data and turn on Push.

Justin Gallagher : I already have push turned on.
    From nevster
  • From http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=151674:

To sync with your device, follow these steps:

    1. Open the Settings application on your device's home screen.
    2. Open Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
    3. Select Add Account...
    4. Select Other.
    5. Select Add CalDAV Account.
    6. Enter your account information: * In the Server field, enter [ google.com ] * In the Username field, enter your full Google Account or Google Apps email address. * In the Password field, enter your Google Account or Google Apps password. * In the Description field, enter the name you'd like to appear on the account.
    7. Select Next at the top of your screen.

After you've completed setup, open the Calendar app on your device and syncing will automatically begin.

By default only your primary calendar will be synced to your device. You can sync additional calendars by visiting the following page from any web browser:

    * https://www.google.com/calendar/iphoneselect
(Google Apps users can go to https://www.google.com/calendar/hosted/your_domain/iphoneselect, replacing 'your_domain' with your actual domain name.)

Select the calendars you'd like to sync, and click Save. The selected calendars will display on your device at the time of the next sync.

666damo : Personally, I used the Exchange ActiveSync method with my iPhone. http://www.google.com/support/mobile/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=138740

Delicious tagged items by Bookmarked count

Delicious has different ways of showing the bookmarks, but there isn't anything that lets you discover the most bookmarked site for a specific tag. For eg., if the tag is Visio, it should show the bookmarks where visio is a tag in order of how many times its been tagged by all users.

Is there something out there??

  • Perhaps not exactly what you wanted but do you know about the popular keyword?

    e.g. http://delicious.com/popular/Visio

    From Daveyjoe
  • Your intuition is correct, getting most-bookmarked-link in a tagset is an awesome way to whittle down solutions to find really common links that are tagged. I recently needed a quick solution for an HTML form that I needed to be emailed with PHP for an old client that had been using an offsite service that broke.

I went to delicious.com/tag/form+php+email and found a lot of bookmarks tagged. I tried going to delicious.com/popular/form+php+email but it just truncates the single, first tag.

My final good-enough solution was this greasemonkey script that adds a couple links to sort the visible links by popularity (and others) with javascript. I then set the # visible to 100. The obvious popular link floated to the top and saved me a lot of time of sorting through bad solutions!

Its like Stack Exchange says--the best result should float to the top! Why didn't Yahoo think of that? Why can't we sort all bookmarked items? Is it some sort of caching concern?

Are there any only music services that permit re-downloading purchased music in the event of a data-loss?

I've been using Amazon because their MP3s are drm-free, but now I'm curious are there any music-resellers that have distribute drm-free, and have a decent policy that in the event of data-loss I can redownload my legally purchased music?

  • I've bought from 7digital in the past. They provide tracks in DRM-free MP3 as well as AAC and WMA. There is a "Locker" where you can redownload songs that you've previously purchased.

  • Also, http://thesixtyone.com allows it.

Create address labels from gmail contacts in google docs?

Is there a way to create a address labels in google docs based on my gmail contacts (even better would be a group of contacts I made). Essentially allowing me to easily create all my address labels for mailing out invitations or christmas cards or whatever in just a few steps.

    1. It seems to me if you use the Print option in the contact manager.
    2. You can select to print just addresses. That opens a new browser window and formats it for printing.
    3. Use 'Ctrl-A' selecting all the information, including headers.
    4. Paste it into Excel.
    5. Save the Excel file.
    6. Run a mail merge using MS Word.

It seems like a lot of steps but it works rather smoothly and doesn't take much time at all. Once in the mail merge labels you can reformat the font just about any way you want.

jschoen : @Josh Thanks for those steps. But what I was really looking for was a solution to do this with Google docs. This is definitely the next best solution though.

Any good alternative to Google Alert?

Google Alert is a decent webapp and I use it for following some topics, but I receive one email pr. topic every day and it's a bit hard to track.

Are there any good alternatives e.g. one that would enable me to follow multiple topics and get notified on news in different categories.

Something that combines social media, web search, news and blogs would be of interest.

From web app grm

Is there any Social Translation web site?

Is there any web app that people can translate texts (articles, movie subtitles, etc) together?

  • use any colloborative editor:

akira : look at the google-translator-toolkit i mentioned, that looks really like a collaborative editor for bigger translations.
    From fretje
  • I set up a wiki for this purpose, learnicelandic.net. Sadly my solution would work for you only if you want to set up a wiki and have a bunch of pre-existing friends and collegues that will start using the site right away. My site turned out to be a wiki-ghost-town.

I have attempted to do collaborative translations on phpBB sites because there is about one per language and there are usually several people on each board, but phpBB leaves a lot to be desired as it has no wiki features at all and I have to manual merge the corrections and twittle with [quote] tags to give corrections.

  • I don't think this is quite what you're looking for, but the premise is strongly displayed here as a social community. From that link:

Social Network (Facebook, Twitter, etc) User Account Integration (duplicate scenario)

So there are definitely many tutorials out there regarding how to integrate various individual social network authentication/registration into existing user accounts. But the scenario I can't seem to find out much information about is if a user signs into your account with different social network credentials. For example:

Scenario #1
User registers on site using site's authentication.
User then signs in/registers on site using Facebook Connect.
User then signs in/registers on site using Twitter.

How do I integrate all of these into one account?

Obviously once a user is registered, they can add other social network associations in the account settings pages. But I am more concerned if they register via the other social network not remembering they are already setup.

My general thoughts are trying to figure out a way to use the "username" or email to try and guess and present the user a way to combine accounts right there.

Anyone have any thoughts?

From web app Matt
  • Here's how it works

    Instead of a one-to-one (userID<->eMailAddress) user accounts become one-to-many (userID<->OpenID|FB|Twitter|Google|Aol).

The first time they sign up using one of the connections you create a unique ID entry in your users list representing that person. Then you associate that unique id with the FB/OpenID/Twitter account.

On your site, that user is represented by the ID you assigned them when they first signed up. When they associate more accounts with that ID it gives them more redundant ways to access that account.

IE. User accounts on that type of a site are one-to-many. So a user could have a GMail OpenID account, an AOL OpenID account, a Facebook acount, and a Twitter account all associated with a single ID on your site. That way, if they forget the password or cancel one of those accounts they can still connect with the others.

Your authentication just verifies that they are who they say they are through the third party API and opens a session with their ID specific to your site when they login.

If they forget their password, give the option to send it as a message to one of the accounts that are associated with the external IDs.

OpenID and third party authentication has the advantage that it isn't tied to any single external ID so you don't even need to store an eMail address. This is a huge benefit because: 1, users are reluctant to give away email addresses these days due to the high volume of spam that comes with it and ; two, users often change emails and forget about orphaned accounts that may be associated with that email.

Note: The way you present your question is from a webmaster/webdeveloper's point of view. I would direct this answer to stackoverflow.com as offtopic because but it doesn't quite fit there either. I suggest you commit to the Pro Webmasters FAQ site that's on the verge of being released into private beta because you'll find much better info there. IE, this would be a perfect question for that site.

Matt : thanks for your answer. i guess i mis-understood the nature of this site. sorry about that. regarding your answer, i understand how to do that part, the scenario i am thinking about is more like the following: user signs into my site using twitter auth. user has not registered before, so he is added as a new user with a link to that twitter account. same user signs into my site again using facebook auth, forgetting that he/she already signed in previously with twitter. so this is kind of a new user but i need to link it to the already created account somehow. i guess use email address?
Evan Plaice : @Matt I see. In that case, you'd need a way to merge the two accounts together into one because each would have a unique ID account number on your site. Tying accounts to an email address as the default identity is no better than having Twitter/FB because people often change email identities more often than twitter/fb. This would have to be a special administrative task where you'd probably need to authenticate the identity of the use across both accounts using an email.
Evan Plaice : @Matt Hopefully this is a rare exception on your site because it will be such a pain to deal with. The easy-way-out would be to just tell your user to delete one of the accounts and keep the other as the primary.

What is a good small business online support application?

I am looking for a web application to manage my support emails. Our business has 5 employees and we split the task of answering support questions. Twitter Search API

How come when I do a search threw the twitterAPI, the results are so delayed, as supposed to how it is on the search.twitter.com?

I am writing a little joke script that responds to people in real time.

Any ideas?

  • If you're looking to do real-time responding you may want to look in to Twitter Streaming API. You can use the filter method and supply 'track' keywords that function much like search but the result are streamed to you in real-time.

  • The accuracy and timeliness of the Twitter Search results depend on a number of things, such as which server you hit, whether or not the result has been cached, whether or not the search you are doing is a trending topic (Twitter will curate the timeline for trending topics), etc.

The API at search.twitter.com and the website search.twitter.com are both on the same machines, and so any difference in reporting is due to individual variance in the webserver you hit, rather than any difference between the API and HTML version.

Stop Gmail from automatically creating contacts

Gmail really likes to make contacts for me and stick them in my "All Contacts" list. I'd much rather manage my contacts myself and only add people when I want to specifically do so. (Actually, I wouldn't mind if they managed the list automatically except that oftentimes I get contacts made from mailing lists and sometimes the names are wrong, which is inconvenient.)

How can I make it so that my contacts list is neither obnoxiously long nor badly spelled and punctuated?

  • You can't. Google adds everyone you respond to under All Contacts, from there though you must explicitly click the contact and use the Move to My Contacts in order to add them to your list. In short there are two types of contacts:

    • Google's All Contacts which has everyone you ever wrote to
    • And, yours My Contacts, which has only those you explicitly add.

See this article another contact-customization pertaining to when your contacts can chat with you.

  • There's currently no way to switch off the automatic addition of all contacts. It's been something users have been asking for pretty much since the start.

The best thing to do right now is to just filter out the auto-added ones.. go to http://www.google.com/contacts and in the search box put a space, then hit enter. That will give you a list split into My Contacts and All Contacts, and you can delete the un-used All Contacts people from there.

How do you unhide a friend on your Facebook wall?

On facebook I was trying to hide notifications from an application but I accidental hit the person's name. How can I undo the hiding of a friend?

  • Scroll to the bottom of your news feed and click "Edit Options." Find your friend's name in the "Hide" list and remove via the "x" next to his or her name.

  • If you remove something from your Wall, it is gone forever and you cannot get it back.

If you have hidden a friend, page, or application from your News Feed and want to unhide it, then as MrGumbe noted you can scroll to the bottom of the News Feed and click Edit Options on the right side of the shaded bar. However the dialog that pops up is different depending on whether you were showing "Top News" or "Most Recent".

The "Top News" dialog has different tabs for hidden Friends, Pages, and Applications (if any are hidden). To unhide any of these, click the appropriate tab at the top if necessary and then click its "Add To News Feed" button.

Top News - Edit Options dialog

The "Most Recent" dialog shows hidden friends and pages in the Hide column; click the "X" to unhide. It allows you to hide additional friends but does not have any way to control hidden applications.

How can I see what gmail accounts are using my email as the secondary/backup email?

I have an older gmail account that I set up that I need access to. I know that I used my primary gmail address as the backup account, but I can't remember the username that I used.

I'd swear that I found somewhere in settings or somewhere that I saw this before; but I think there's a place that lets you see what other accounts are using your gmail account as the secondary account.

Any ideas?

  • If account A is pulling emails from account B using POP3 you can check on https://mail.google.com/mail/#settings/accounts.

If account B is forwarding emails to account A then you will have to find an email that was forwarded and check the to address. Perhaps searching for a type of email that would have been delivered to account b.

Account A = primary account being backed up to.

Account B = lost secondary account being backed up from.

  • AccountA = Older account AccountB = Primary account

So, what you're saying is that for AccountA, you listed AccountB as the alternate email? When you did that, Google (at least now they do) sent an email to your AccountB email from account-verification-noreply@google.com and had you verify the association. If you can find the email and click on the link within it, it should ask you to login to AccountA.
